Water Dripping From the Roof But No Rain: Causes and How to Fix

Most homeowners assume a roof leak is only possible during a storm or heavy rain, so when water appears on a dry day, it is not always clear who to call or where the problem is coming from.

In our experience, a ceiling leak when it is not raining usually means water from an earlier storm is still trapped in the insulation or roof assembly, or the moisture is coming from another source like a leaking pipe, clogged air-conditioning drain, or condensation around ductwork, all of which can create drips and ceiling stains that look like a roofing problem.

Water also travels along rafters, pipes, ducts, and ceiling joists before it reaches the drywall, sometimes appearing several feet from where the problem began, so the location of the drip does not always make the source obvious.

In this guide, we will explain the most common reasons water may drip from the roof or ceiling when it is not raining, what you should check first, and how we find and repair the source of the leak.

What to Do When Water Is Dripping but It Is Not Raining

When you notice water dripping from the ceiling on a dry day, the first priority is to contain it and prevent further damage.

Nothing you do inside the room will repair the source, but a few immediate steps can stop more water from entering and help determine whether the problem involves the roof, plumbing, HVAC system, or condensation.

Turn Off the Air Conditioner

If it is warm outside and the air conditioner has been running, turn it off at the thermostat.

An air handler located in the attic produces condensation while the system is cooling the home. If the condensate drain is clogged, the drain pan is damaged, or water is forming around poorly insulated lines, the dripping may continue for as long as the system runs.

Turning it off will not clear the blockage, but it can prevent additional condensate from forming while the source is inspected.

Turn Off Power Near the Leak

Water can travel along ceiling joists and reach wiring, light fixtures, ceiling fans, and outlets before it becomes visible below.

If the drip is near any electrical component, do not touch the fixture or use the wall switch. Turn off power to that area at the breaker panel only when you can reach it safely. Do not enter a wet basement, crawl space, or utility area to access the panel.

Contain the Water and Move Belongings

Place a bucket or another large container beneath the drip and protect the surrounding floor with towels or plastic sheeting.

Move furniture, electronics, rugs, and valuables out of the room rather than just a few feet away. Water can spread across the ceiling, and the drip location may change as more moisture moves through the material.

Cover anything that is too heavy to move.

Stay Clear of Sagging Drywall

A ceiling that has begun to bow, bubble, crack, or sag may be holding water above it. Keep people and pets away from the affected area because wet drywall can become heavy and fall unexpectedly.

Do not attempt to open or drain the ceiling yourself when the bulge is near wiring, a ceiling fan, or a light fixture. A roofing or water-restoration professional can determine how to release water and safely remove damaged material.

Photograph the Damage Before Cleaning Up

Take wide photographs showing the room and the location of the leak, followed by close photographs and video of the drip, ceiling stain, damaged drywall, flooring, and wet belongings.

Note when you first noticed the water, when it last rained, whether the air conditioner was running, and whether any plumbing fixtures had recently been used. These details can help narrow down the source.

Keep receipts for temporary protection, drying equipment, emergency repairs, and damaged property. Dated documentation may also be useful if you need to file a homeowners insurance claim.

Check Whether It Rained Recently

A roof leak can continue dripping after the weather clears. Water may remain trapped in insulation, beneath the roofing materials, or inside the roof assembly for hours or even days after a storm.

If the stain grows larger after rain but continues to drip once the sky is clear, the roof may still be responsible.

Check the Attic When It Is Safe to Do So

When the attic is accessible, it can provide the clearest clues about where the water is coming from.

Look for moisture around:

  • The underside of the roof decking
  • Wet or compressed insulation
  • Plumbing pipes and fittings
  • The air handler and condensate drain pan
  • Refrigerant lines and ductwork
  • Roof vents and other penetrations

Do not enter if the access area is wet, the ceiling feels unstable, or there is no safe walking surface. Attic floors may not be fully decked, and stepping between joists can send someone through the ceiling.

Common Causes of Water Dripping When It Is Not Raining

When you see water dripping on a dry day, the roof may not be the source at all.

When we come out for a leak inspection, we usually begin by checking when the drip starts, whether the air conditioner is running, which rooms are above the stain, and whether the water is appearing inside or along the exterior roof edge.

Here are some of the most common causes we notice:

Attic Condensation

Warm, humid air from inside the home can rise into the attic and meet the colder underside of the roof decking. When enough moisture condenses on that surface, it begins to drip onto the insulation and the ceiling below.

In our inspections, we often find that the problem is not the roof covering itself. Air may be escaping around recessed lights, attic hatches, plumbing penetrations, and other openings in the ceiling, while poor attic ventilation prevents that moisture from leaving.

Blocked soffit vents are usually the main cause. This might happen if the insulation covers the intake openings, the vents are painted over, or there isn’t enough open ventilation for the ridge vent to work properly.

Condensation is often more noticeable on cold mornings or during sudden temperature changes, and it may occur even without recent rain.

An Air-Conditioning Condensate Overflow

An attic air handler removes moisture from the air while it cools the home. That water should leave through a condensate drain line.

When the line becomes clogged with algae, dirt, or other buildup, water can back up into the primary drain pan and spill into the ceiling below. If the secondary pan is cracked, rusted, missing, or already full, there may be nothing left to contain the overflow.

If the ceiling begins dripping during hot weather while the air conditioner is running, we check the air handler, drain line, drain pans, and shutoff switch before assuming the roof is leaking.

Condensation on Ductwork or Refrigerant Lines

Cold ducts and refrigerant lines can collect moisture when they pass through a hot, humid attic. This usually happens where insulation is missing, damaged, compressed, or no longer sealed around the equipment.

Water dripping from ductwork may create a stain that follows a relatively straight line across the ceiling rather than remaining in one spot.

When we find this problem, the repair may involve replacing damaged insulation, sealing air leaks around the ducts, and correcting excess humidity or ventilation problems in the attic.

Bathroom or Kitchen Exhaust Fans Venting Into the Attic

Bathroom and kitchen fans should carry humid air completely outside the home. In some houses, the duct ends inside the attic, has become disconnected, or terminates near a soffit where the moisture can be drawn back into the attic.

Every shower or cooking session can then send warm, damp air against the roof decking. The moisture may condense overhead, run back through the duct, or drip through the fan housing.

If water appears around a bathroom fan shortly after a shower, we inspect the exhaust duct and its exterior termination rather than assuming there is a roof leak directly above it.

A Leaking Plumbing Supply Line

A supply line remains under pressure, so a leak may drip continuously whether or not anyone is using water.

Small pinholes, loose fittings, and failed connections can release water into the ceiling cavity for some time before the damage becomes visible below. If the drip remains steady throughout the day and does not change with the weather or HVAC use, a pressurized plumbing line should be checked.

The affected water supply may need to be shut off until a plumber can complete the repair.

A Drain Pipe or Plumbing Fixture Leak

Drain leaks usually behave differently from supply-line leaks. They may only appear after someone showers, flushes a toilet, runs a sink, or uses the washing machine.

Failed toilet seals, shower pans, tub drains, and drainpipe connections can all allow water into the ceiling below.

If the wet spot is beneath a bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room, we ask what was being used shortly before the dripping began.

Water Still Draining From an Earlier Storm

Even on a clear day, a drip can still come from the roof. Insulation, decking, and underlayment may absorb water during heavy rain and continue releasing it for hours or days afterward.

When we inspect this type of leak, we look for water tracks along rafters, darkened decking, rusty nail tips, compressed insulation, and stains that grow after each storm.

A Water Heater or Appliance Leak

Water heaters, washing machines, refrigerators, and other appliances can leak through a floor or ceiling below them.

A failed hose, a loose drain connection, an overflowing appliance pan, or a damaged fitting may cause a slow drip that is first noticed downstairs.

If an appliance is located above or near the stain, we check its connections before opening the roof.

Morning Dew or Frost Melting From the Roof Edge

When water drips from the eaves, gutters, or roof edge on a cool morning, it may simply be dew or frost melting as the roof warms.

That is different from water coming through an interior ceiling and does not automatically indicate a roof failure. However, water standing in a clogged gutter can also continue dripping long after rain has stopped, so the gutter and downspout should still be checked for debris and poor drainage.

How to Fix Water Dripping From the Roof When It Is Not Raining

A ceiling stain caused by an overflowing air-conditioning drain needs a very different solution from one caused by a plumbing line, attic condensation, or rainwater still trapped above the ceiling.

The repair depends on where the water is coming from, and the source should be corrected before any drywall is patched or painted.

Clear and Repair the Air-Conditioning Drain System

If the condensate line is clogged, an HVAC technician can clear the blockage and flush the line so water drains away from the air handler again.

The drain pan should also be checked for cracks, rust, or standing water. A damaged pan needs to be replaced rather than sealed temporarily, since another overflow could send water back into the ceiling.

If the system does not already have a working float switch, adding one can help prevent future damage. The switch shuts the air conditioner down when water begins to back up, preventing the unit from producing additional condensate until the drainage problem is corrected.

Correct Attic Ventilation and Air Leaks

Condensation in the attic usually requires more than adding another roof vent. The intake and exhaust need to work together, and humid indoor air should be kept from entering the attic in the first place.

The repair may include:

  • Clearing soffit vents that are blocked by insulation or paint
  • Installing baffles to keep insulation away from the intake vents
  • Checking that ridge or other exhaust vents are open and working
  • Sealing gaps around recessed lights, plumbing penetrations, and the attic hatch
  • Adding insulation where coverage is thin or uneven

These changes reduce the amount of warm, humid air reaching the colder roof decking and provide a way for any moisture that does enter the attic to escape.

Reroute Bathroom and Kitchen Exhaust Fans

An exhaust fan that empties into the attic should be connected to a dedicated exterior vent.

The duct needs to run completely outside through a proper wall or roof cap. It should also be insulated and installed with a slight slope so condensation does not collect inside and drain back toward the fan.

Leaving the duct open in the attic allows moisture from every shower or cooking period to collect around the roof decking and insulation.

Repair Sweating Ductwork and Refrigerant Lines

Cold ductwork and refrigerant lines need enough insulation to keep their exterior surfaces from collecting condensation.

Damaged, compressed, or missing insulation should be replaced, and gaps around joints sealed. If attic humidity is contributing to the problem, the ventilation and air-sealing issues should be corrected simultaneously.

Simply drying the ceiling will not stop the dripping if the cold surface above it continues to sweat whenever the air conditioner runs.

Repair the Plumbing Source

A leaking supply line, drainpipe, shower pan, toilet seal, or appliance connection should be repaired by a plumber before the ceiling is opened and rebuilt.

Supply-line leaks may require shutting off the water until the damaged pipe or fitting is replaced. Drain leaks can sometimes be isolated by testing one fixture at a time or using dye to determine where the water is escaping.

Once the plumbing repair is complete, the surrounding framing and insulation should be checked for moisture that may have spread beyond the visible stain on the ceiling.

Repair the Roof Component That Failed

When the moisture does trace back to the roof, the repair should address the failed component rather than coat the surrounding area with sealant.

When we find a cracked pipe boot, we replace it and make sure the flashing flange sits beneath the shingle courses above it. If it’s a failed chimney or wall flashing, we rebuild so each layer directs water onto the roofing below. We also remove or replace lifted or damaged shingles, and correct exposed or backed-out fasteners.

If the decking has become soft or started to delaminate, the affected section needs to be cut out and replaced.

Remove Wet Insulation and Dry the Ceiling Cavity

Insulation that has been saturated or remained wet through repeated cycles may need to be removed. Wet insulation loses performance and can hold moisture against the framing, roof decking, and drywall.

The cavity should be dried fully using airflow, dehumidification, or professional drying equipment before it is closed again. A moisture meter can help confirm that the surrounding materials are dry rather than relying on appearance alone.

Addressing wet materials quickly also reduces the risk of mold growing inside the enclosed space.

Repair the Ceiling Last

We regularly see ceilings that were patched before the leak was fixed. They look finished until the water returns, and the homeowner ends up paying for the same interior repair twice.

The ceiling should only be repaired after the source has been corrected and everything above it is dry.

A small stain on solid drywall may only need stain-blocking primer and fresh paint. Drywall that has sagged, softened, cracked, or begun to crumble should be removed and replaced.

Who Should You Call When Water Is Dripping but It Is Not Raining?

Calling a roofer first may make sense when there was recent rain or the attic shows moisture coming from the roof decking, but a leak tied to the air conditioner or an upstairs bathroom needs a different repair.

A few details can help point you in the right direction before anyone arrives.

Call a Roofer When the Leak Follows Recent Rain

The roof may still be responsible when the dripping starts hours or even days after a storm. Wet insulation and decking can continue releasing stored water after the weather clears.

A roofer should inspect the property when:

  • The stain grows after each storm
  • Water tracks are visible on the underside of the roof
  • Shingles, flashing, valleys, or pipe boots appear damaged
  • The drip is near a chimney, roof vent, skylight, or exterior wall
  • The roof recently experienced strong wind or falling branches

When we inspect this type of leak, we trace the moisture through the attic and check the roofing above it rather than assuming the visible stain is directly below the opening.

Call an HVAC Technician When the Drip Follows Air-Conditioning Use

If the water appears during warm weather and slows after the air conditioner is turned off, the condensate system should be checked first.

An HVAC technician can inspect the drain line, primary and secondary pans, float switch, refrigerant lines, and duct insulation. Water around an attic air handler or a stain that follows the path of a duct often points in this direction.

Leave the system off if running it causes more water to enter the ceiling.

Call a Plumber When the Leak Changes With Fixture Use

A plumbing problem is more likely when the stain is below a bathroom, kitchen, laundry room, water heater, or appliance.

Call a plumber when the dripping begins or becomes heavier after:

  • Taking a shower or bath
  • Flushing a toilet
  • Running a sink
  • Using the washing machine or dishwasher
  • Operating an appliance connected to a water line

A continuous drip that does not change with fixture use may come from a pressurized supply line and should be addressed quickly.

Call an Electrician When Water Is Near Wiring or Fixtures

Water near a light fixture, ceiling fan, outlet, or electrical wiring creates a separate safety concern.

Do not touch the fixture or test it with the wall switch. Turn off power at the breaker only when the panel can be reached safely, then contact an electrician to inspect the affected wiring before power is restored.

Call a Water-Restoration Company for Significant Interior Damage

A roofer, plumber, or HVAC technician can stop the source, but they may not address saturated insulation, widespread ceiling damage, or drying within wall and ceiling cavities.

Water-restoration services may be needed when:

  • The ceiling is sagging or beginning to collapse
  • Insulation has been heavily soaked
  • Water has spread into walls or flooring
  • The area remained wet for an extended period
  • There is visible mold or a persistent musty odor

For larger leaks, more than one contractor may be involved. The source needs to be repaired first, then dried, and any damaged materials replaced.

Do Not Ignore Water Dripping on a Dry Day

Water dripping from the ceiling when it is not raining does not always mean the roof is leaking, but it should never be ignored. You might have moisture draining from an earlier storm, or the source could be an overflowing air-conditioning drain, sweating ductwork, attic condensation, or a plumbing problem above the ceiling.
