Curling Shingles on a Roof: Causes, Risks, and What to Do

In our roof inspections, we photograph curling shingles more than almost any other roof defect. We often see this problem start with lifted corners, raised edges, or uneven tabs that are noticeable from the driveway, even before the roof starts leaking.

Curling is commonly associated with age, but generic lifespan estimates do not always account for the stress a roof experiences from the hot sun, humid summers, repeated wet-and-dry cycles, and heat building up in a poorly ventilated attic. Installation problems and manufacturing defects can also cause shingles to curl earlier than expected.

At first, they look cosmetic, but once the shingles stop lying flat, they no longer seal against wind or shed rainwater as effectively. The lifted edges can allow water to collect beneath, loosen further during storms, and expose the underlayment and decking below.

In this guide, we will explain what causes roof shingles to curl, the problems they can create, and how we determine whether the affected area can be repaired or the roof is beginning to need replacement.

Curling or Cupping vs. Clawing vs. Buckling

Before deciding whether the roof can be repaired, we assess the direction the shingle is moving and whether the problem is limited to a few tabs or is spreading across an entire slope.

Curling or Cupping

Curling, sometimes called cupping, happens when the outer edges or corners of a shingle turn upward while the center remains lower.

From the ground, the roof may appear uneven or wavy, with visible gaps beneath the lifted edges. Once those edges are raised, wind can catch them more easily, and rain may be pushed beneath the shingle during a storm.

Cupping is often associated with age and long-term weather exposure, but it can also appear sooner when attic heat builds up beneath the roof, or the shingles were installed over an unsuitable surface.

Clawing

Clawing is the opposite pattern. The center of the shingle lifts while the edges remain turned downward, creating a raised or arched appearance.

This shape can place stress on the shingle and the fasteners holding it in place. Clawed shingles are often brittle, which makes them more likely to crack or break if someone walks on the roof or attempts to flatten them.

Clawing commonly appears on older roofs, but excessive heat and moisture beneath the roof covering can accelerate deterioration.

Buckling

Buckling is sometimes mistaken for curling, but it usually appears as a longer raised ridge or wrinkle running through several shingles rather than individual corners turning upward.

It may develop when the roof decking moves, the underlayment was installed incorrectly, moisture becomes trapped beneath the shingles, or new roofing was installed over an uneven surface.

Because buckling can involve the layers beneath the shingles, replacing one visible tab may not correct the underlying problem.

Whether the shingles are cupping, clawing, or buckling, the pattern gives us useful information about what is happening to the roof.

A few affected shingles may indicate localized damage, while the same distortion across several slopes often indicates broader aging, heat, moisture, or installation issues.

What Causes Roof Shingles to Curl?

Shingles can curl for several reasons, and the pattern often helps us determine whether the problem began with age, attic heat, moisture, installation, or the roofing material itself.

When we inspect a roof, we look at the lifted tabs and also check the attic ventilation, roof decking, underlayment, fastener placement, and whether the curling is limited to one area or appearing across several slopes.

Normal Aging and Weather Exposure

As asphalt shingles age, the oils that keep them flexible gradually dry out. The material becomes harder and more brittle, making the edges more likely to lift or the center of the shingle more likely to distort.

Hot sun, frequent rain, and repeated wet-and-dry cycles can accelerate that process. Around the Upstate, roofs often experience long periods of summer heat followed by heavy rain and high humidity, so the roof’s condition may not always align with the lifespan printed on the original product literature.

When curling is widespread across an older roof, it usually points to shingles nearing the end of their useful life rather than a few isolated tabs that can be repaired.

Excessive Heat in the Attic

Attic heat is one of the first things we check when shingles are curling earlier than expected.

During the summer, the sun heats the shingles from above while trapped attic air heats the roof decking from below. If the attic cannot draw cooler air through the soffits and release hot air near the ridge, the shingles remain exposed to elevated temperatures for hours at a time.

The problem is often unbalanced ventilation rather than a complete lack of vents. We regularly find ridge vents installed along the roof, while the soffit openings below are blocked by insulation, painted over, or too limited to provide sufficient intake air.

If attic heat contributed to the curling, the airflow should be corrected before new shingles are installed. Otherwise, the replacement roof will be exposed to the same conditions.

Moisture Beneath the Shingles

Humidity can compound the effects of attic heat. Warm, moist air may enter around attic hatches, recessed lights, plumbing penetrations, and exhaust ducts that do not terminate outside.

When that moisture reaches the underside of the roof decking, it can contribute to condensation, swelling, and movement beneath the shingles. Bathroom or kitchen fans discharging into the attic can make the problem considerably worse.

Cupping often occurs when moisture affects the material from below. When we see curled shingles alongside dark decking, damp insulation, rusty fasteners, or mold-like growth in the attic, we inspect the full roof assembly rather than treating the visible tabs as the entire problem.

Heavy Rain Reaching Lifted Shingle Edges

Curling may begin as a material or ventilation problem, but frequent rain is what often turns it into an active leak.

Once an edge no longer lies flat, wind-driven rain can move beneath the shingle and reach the underlayment or decking. The opening may be small, but repeated storms give water more opportunities to find it.

A few curled tabs may not be leaking yet, but they should not be ignored when they are located near a valley, flashing joint, vent, or another area that already handles a large amount of runoff.

Improper Shingle Installation

Shingles that were nailed outside the proper fastening area, installed with too few nails, or fastened too tightly or loosely may never remain flat and secure.

A missing starter course, incorrect shingle exposure, or poor alignment can also prevent the tabs from sealing to the course below. In these cases, curling may appear much earlier than normal and often follows a visible row or installation pattern.

When we find premature curling on a relatively young roof, we check the fasteners and surrounding installation details before assuming the shingles simply wore out.

Installing New Shingles Over an Existing Roof

Installing a second layer over an older roof is one of the more reliable ways to create an uneven surface.

The new shingles follow every curl, raised edge, and irregularity in the layer below them. The additional roofing can also retain more heat, making it difficult to inspect the decking for moisture or deterioration.

We still find layered roofs on older Upstate homes, where the upper shingles began curling only a few years after installation. In those cases, replacing individual tabs does not correct the underlying distorted surface.

A full tear-off removes both roofing layers, allowing the decking to be inspected and repaired before a new system is installed.

Tree Cover, Shade, and Roof Debris

Two otherwise similar roofs can age very differently depending on the surrounding trees.

Pine needles can collect in valleys and between shingle courses, while hardwood leaves hold moisture against the roof during the fall. Shaded slopes also stay damp longer after rain, giving algae and moss more opportunity to establish.

That retained moisture can contribute to granule loss and uneven aging. We often see the shaded side of a roof curling or deteriorating faster than the side that receives more sun and dries more quickly.

Manufacturing Defects

Occasionally, shingles begin curling earlier than expected because of a problem with the material itself.

We become more suspicious of a product defect when curling appears broadly across a relatively young roof but the ventilation, installation, and decking all appear sound.

The installation date, shingle manufacturer, product line, and warranty records can help determine whether a claim may be available.

Ice Dams in Cold Climates

In colder climates, ice dams can contribute to lifted, curled, and damaged shingles along the lower edge of the roof.

They form when heat escaping into the attic melts snow higher on the roof. The water runs toward the colder eaves, refreezes, and gradually creates a ridge of ice. As more snow melts, water collects behind that ridge and may be forced beneath the shingles.

Repeated exposure can loosen the shingle edges, damage the underlayment, saturate the decking, and cause leaks near exterior walls. The added weight of ice may also strain gutters and the lower edge of the roof.

Attic air leaks, insulation gaps, and ventilation problems should also be addressed to keep the roof surface cooler during snowy weather.

Freeze-and-Thaw Cycles

Repeated freezing and thawing can also worsen shingles that are already cracked, loose, or beginning to curl.

Water enters small openings around raised edges, fasteners, flashing, or surface cracks. When the temperature falls, that moisture freezes and expands. As the cycle repeats, the opening may grow larger, and the shingle can lift farther from the roof.

Freeze-and-thaw damage is often most noticeable along the eaves, in valleys, on shaded slopes, and in areas where snow or moisture remains longer. It can also accelerate deterioration around chimney flashing, pipe boots, and other roof penetrations.

What Problems Can Curling Shingles Cause?

Curling shingles may begin as a small change in appearance, but the lifted edges leave parts of the roof more exposed than they were designed to be.

The longer the shingles remain raised, the easier it becomes for wind, rain, and debris to work beneath them.

Water Can Get Beneath the Shingles

Shingles rely on overlap and a sealed lower edge to move rainwater down the roof. Once the corners or tabs begin to lift, the seal is weakened, and wind-driven rain can reach the underlayment below.

At first, the underlayment may keep water out of the home. Repeated exposure, however, can eventually lead to damp decking, wet insulation, ceiling stains, and interior leaks.

Wind Can Lift or Tear the Shingles Away

A flat shingle gives the wind very little to catch. A curled edge acts more like a raised flap.

Strong gusts can lift the shingle farther, break the adhesive bond, loosen the fasteners, or tear the tab completely away.

We often find that a roof with widespread curling loses more shingles during a storm because many of the edges were already exposed before the wind arrived.

The Shingles Can Crack and Break

Aging shingles lose flexibility as the asphalt dries out. Once they begin curling, the raised sections are placed under additional stress and may crack along the bend.

Curled shingles are also more easily damaged when someone walks on the roof. Trying to press a brittle tab flat can cause it to split rather than return it to its original position.

The Underlayment and Decking Become More Exposed

The shingles are the roof’s first line of protection. When they no longer lie flat, sunlight, rain, and debris can reach areas that were intended to remain covered.

Once the underlayment deteriorates, water can reach the roof decking. Repeated moisture may cause the sheathing to swell, soften, or delaminate, turning what might have been a small shingle repair into a larger section of roof work.

Granule Loss Can Accelerate

Curled shingles often move slightly during wind and temperature changes. That movement can loosen more of the protective granules embedded in the surface.

As granules wash into the gutters, the asphalt below receives more direct ultraviolet exposure. The shingle then dries and hardens faster, which can increase the curling and create a cycle of continued deterioration.

Moisture Can Reach the Attic and Interior

Not every curled shingle causes an immediate ceiling leak. Water may first show up as dark roof decking, rusty nail tips, damp insulation, or a musty smell in the attic.

By the time water reaches the drywall below, the leak may have been active through several storms.

This is why we inspect the attic and roof structure, even when the homeowner has not yet seen any stains inside.

The Roof May Become More Difficult to Repair

Replacing a few curled shingles may be possible when the surrounding material is still flexible and in good condition.

As the roof ages, however, lifting the nearby courses can crack them or disturb shingles that were not previously leaking. Matching the original color and product may also become difficult.

Widespread curling usually makes isolated repairs less practical because the visible defects are only part of the broader deterioration.

Curling Can Affect a Home Sale or Insurance Inspection

A roof with visible curling may be flagged during a home inspection because it suggests the shingles are aging, poorly ventilated, or no longer sealing properly.

Buyers may request a repair, roof replacement, or credit before closing. An insurance company may also request additional documentation or corrective work when the condition is widespread enough to increase the risk of wind or water damage.

Curling does not always mean the roof needs immediate replacement, but it should be inspected before the raised shingles begin turning into missing tabs, damaged decking, or an active leak.

What to Do If Your Roof Shingles Are Curling

Curling shingles should be inspected before the raised edges begin to crack, tear away, or allow water beneath the roof covering.

The repair depends on how many shingles are affected, how flexible the surrounding material remains, and what caused the distortion in the first place.

Do Not Try to Flatten Them Yourself

Pressing a curled shingle back down does not restore the asphalt or adhesive that has already deteriorated. Older shingles are often brittle, and stepping on them or trying to force the raised edge flat can cause cracks that were not there before.

Adding exposed nails or applying roofing cement across the surface may temporarily hold a tab, but it can also create new penetrations and make the eventual repair more difficult.

You can look for visible curling from the ground, but avoid walking on the roof. A lifted shingle may not support weight as well as a flat, flexible shingle does.

Have the Roof and Attic Inspected

When we inspect curling shingles, we look beyond the visible tabs. The pattern can help show whether the problem is related to age, attic heat, moisture, installation, or damage beneath the roof covering.

When we come out for inspection, we always check for:

  • The number and location of affected shingles
  • Granule loss, cracking, and brittleness
  • Nail placement and shingle exposure
  • Roof valleys, flashing, and penetrations
  • Decking movement or soft areas
  • Soffit intake and ridge exhaust ventilation
  • Moisture, staining, or condensation in the attic

A few curled shingles on one slope may have a very different solution from widespread curling across the entire roof.

Replace Individual Shingles When the Damage Is Localized

A localized repair may be possible when only a few shingles are affected, and the surrounding roof is still in good condition.

During the repair, the damaged shingles are removed, and the decking and underlayment beneath them are checked. Replacement shingles are then installed and fastened correctly, with the surrounding courses resealed as needed.

The repair becomes more difficult when the nearby shingles are brittle. Lifting them to reach the damaged area can cause additional cracks, so the condition of the surrounding material must be considered before work begins.

Correct the Cause of Premature Curling

Replacing the visible shingles without addressing the underlying cause may only provide a temporary improvement.

If the attic is overheating, blocked soffit vents, inadequate intake, or restricted exhaust may need to be corrected. Moisture problems may require air sealing, insulation work, or rerouting bathroom and kitchen exhaust ducts outside.

Installation defects, uneven decking, or a second layer of roofing may require a more extensive repair than replacing individual tabs. The new shingles need a flat, dry, and stable surface to remain sealed.

Consider Replacement When Curling Is Widespread

Roof replacement is usually the more practical option when curling appears across several slopes, the shingles are brittle, granule loss is extensive, or new problems continue developing in different areas.

A full replacement allows the old roofing to be removed so the decking, underlayment, flashing, and ventilation details can be inspected and corrected. That is especially important on a layered roof, where the condition of the original shingles and wood cannot be properly evaluated from above.

When we inspect the roof, we will recommend a localized repair when it can provide a lasting result. If the curling is part of broader shingle failure, replacing the system may cost less over time than continuing to repair one section after another.

When Should Curling Shingles Be Repaired or Replaced?

Curling does not automatically mean the entire roof needs to be replaced.

A few affected shingles may be repairable, particularly when the roof is still relatively young, and the surrounding material remains flexible.

Once curling is widespread, however, replacing individual shingles often becomes a temporary fix rather than a lasting solution.

We consider the condition of the entire system rather than relying solely on the installation date. The flexibility of the shingles, the amount of granule loss, the condition of the decking, the repair history, and the cause of the curling usually provide a clearer answer.

When a localized repair can provide a lasting result, that is generally the more sensible option. When shingles are failing across the roof, continuing to replace small sections may cost more over time without preventing the next leak or wind-damage area.

Repair May Be Enough When the Damage Is Localized

A localized repair may make sense when only a small number of shingles are curling, and the rest of the roof remains in good condition.

When we inspect the area, we check whether the surrounding shingles can be lifted without cracking, whether the decking beneath them is solid, and whether matching replacement shingles are available.

We also look for a specific cause, such as storm damage, an exposed fastener, a small installation defect, or a problem limited to one roof penetration.

Repair is more likely to be worthwhile when:

  • Only a few shingles are affected
  • Curling is limited to one small area or roof slope
  • The surrounding shingles remain flexible
  • Granule loss is minor
  • The roof is not near the end of its expected service life
  • The decking and underlayment beneath the area are dry and solid
  • The cause can be corrected without disturbing a large section of roofing

The damaged shingles should usually be removed and replaced rather than forced flat. Pressing a brittle shingle down or covering the edge with roofing cement may hold it temporarily, but it does not restore the material or correct the reason it curled.

Replacement May Be Better When Curling Is Widespread

When curling appears across several slopes or throughout most of the roof, the individual shingles are usually showing the same broader deterioration.

At that point, replacing a few visible tabs does not address the many shingles that are beginning to fail but have not curled enough to notice from the ground.

The surrounding material may also be too brittle to lift safely during a repair, causing more shingles to crack as the work proceeds.

Replacement is more likely to be the practical option when:

  • Curling appears across large sections of the roof
  • Shingles are brittle, cracked, or breaking at the edges
  • Significant granule loss is visible
  • Multiple leaks have developed in different areas
  • The roof has already required repeated repairs
  • Decking is soft, swollen, or damaged in several places
  • The roof has more than one layer of shingles
  • The existing roof is already near the end of its service life

A full replacement also allows the old roofing to be removed so the decking, flashing, underlayment, and ventilation can be inspected properly.

If attic heat, trapped moisture, or an uneven surface contributed to the curling, those conditions can be corrected before the new shingles are installed.

Have Curling Shingles Inspected Before They Begin Leaking

Curling shingles do not always mean the roof needs to be replaced immediately, but they are a sign that the roofing system is no longer lying flat and sealing as intended.

A few damaged shingles may be repairable, while widespread curling usually indicates age, attic heat, moisture, installation issues, or deterioration across the roof.

Waiting until a curled shingle tears away or water reaches the ceiling can turn a smaller roofing issue into damaged underlayment, wet insulation, or rotted decking. An inspection can show whether the problem is limited to one area and whether anything beneath the shingles also needs attention.
